The Apollo Theatre

The site where the Apollo theatre stands was originally a Victorian Methodist Chapel, which closed in August 1969.

John Hancock and a committee purchased the building in 1970 with the specific idea of converting the building into a Theatre to assist and provide a base for the thriving Amateur dramatic companies on the island.

After much work, the building was completed in March 1972 and opened for its first Spring Festival.

FASCINATING FACT!

The name 'Apollo' was chosen because the year 1969, when the idea of buying the building to be used as a Theatre was first thought of, was when the Apollo moon shot took place. Coupled with this is the fact that 'Apollo' is the God of the Muses, inspiring poetry and music.

APOLLO LOGO

A competition to design a suitable logo for the theatre was set for 'A' level Art students at Carisbrooke High School and this was won, appropriately, by John Hancock's daughter, Kate. It is shown at the bottom right of all our webpages.
